To do so, you must meet the following requirements:

  • Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application and present in the United States.
  • Have had an approved permanent residence for five years or three years if married to a U.S. citizen.
  • Live continuously in the country since obtaining your permanent residence.
  • Proficiency in basic English language.
  • Demonstrate that you have been of good moral character since your arrival to the country.
  • Study, know and understand U.S. history.

Exceptions to the Citizenship test

If you meet certain age requirements, you may be able to take your exam in your native language with an interpreter:

  • 50 years of age or older: and 20 years as a permanent resident.
  • 55 years of age or older: and 15 years as a permanent resident.
  • 65 years of age or older: and 20 years as a permanent resident.

You may also be eligible for a citizenship exemption (English and civics test) if you have a physical or mental disability.

How can I obtain citizenship if my parents are American?

You must apply for an N-600 certificate of citizenship if you were born outside the United States, are the child of U.S. citizen parents, and meet the age requirements at the time of application.
